Cybersecurity incidents in Spanish strategic sectors and operators have decreased by 80% in four years. Good news that is reflected in the increase from practically 1,200 incidents managed in 2020 to the 237 that occurred during 2023. This is reflected in an analysis by the technology company Pandora FMS based on historical data from Incibe (National Cybersecurity Institute). .
In the transportation sector, the opposite trend occurs with a notable increase, as it goes from 17% of recorded cyber attacks to practically 25% between 2022 and 2023. A significant increase, especially taking into account the relevance that this market has in development of the economy and the functioning of society itself.
These strategic sectors or operators are considered this way because they are critical and essential for the proper functioning of a country. Its correct activity is what maintains balance in the day-to-day life of a society and includes both public organizations and private companies.
Those that suffered the most procedures of this type in 2023 were the financial and transportation sectors, each accumulating more than 25% of incidents. Energy also stands out, which exceeded 22% of cyber attacks. The water sector with 4% continues to appear among the targets of cybercriminals and, for the first time, the public institute incorporates the ICT and Communications sector into its classification with a significant 18.3% of the incidents managed in 2023.
